A former Reno man has filed a federal civil rights complaint in Reno asking the music artist Sting to pay him $3.5 billion in royalties for the songs “Roxanne” and “Message in a Bottle” claiming the songs were based on his life experiences. Roy Daniel Clyde Smith, of Nampa, Idaho filed the breach of contract complaint last week against Gordon Matthew Sumner, whose professional name is Sting, who was also a member of the popular band The Police. Sting’s attorneys in court papers denies Smith’s claims, and say that according to his management records, neither he nor his drummer Stewart Copeland, who is also named in the complaint, were in Reno when Smith said he met them in 1977 or 1978. Smith claimed he met Sting and Copeland when he was a cook at Molly’s Garden Restaurant inside Fitzgerald’s Casino, that recently closed. He said he went to Sting’s home on Locust Street and during the course of drinking beer and playing bumper pool, he told him about writing messages in a bottle and throwing them into the ocean so his mother could find him, and then his experiences with a prostitute named Roxanne. "When we parted company on Sunday about mid-day, you told me that if the two songs did any good that you would pay me royalties," Smith wrote Sting in a 2007 letter sent to his agent. Contacted Monday morning Smith, who said he moved back to Reno, said he did not want to comment.

As I reported in a forum thread. Kiro radio in Seattle, Wa contacted Mr. Smith to set up to do an on radio interview. He, Mr. Smith told the producer that he couldn't do it that that but to call the next day around 2 P.M. and he would happily do the interview.
The next days show begins. First hour and a half is in the bag. I don't like his show normally but I heard the words Sting, Police, Copeland, 3.5 Billion somethingsuit so I stayed tuned. The shows host was bragging about the fact that they were going to do an interview with the man that had sued the Police and that they would do the interview right after the top of the hour news after the break. Basically I was held hostage by this. I passed a coffee shop, a fish and tackle shop, a fast food restaurant, a grocery store, and the gas station (twice) just to be able to hear this interview.
When the producer called to begin the interview Mr. Smith reportedly changed the condition of the interview to be that they flew him to Seattle to do the interview live in studio.
By that time I got home clueless then as I had been when I had turned on the show. Except they had mentioned whats been reported here.
If I knew that the interview wasn't going to have occured I wouldn't have stuck to the radio. On the otherhand I was able to stick to my diet and I wasn't spending more money on fish hooks. OK so all the money I saved got burned during the trips around the block.

This is the biggest bunch of CRAP I have ever read in my entire LIFE! It makes me Laugh!! HOW in gods name can Sting afford to travel to the USA in 1977 or in early to MID 1978. STING HAD NO MONEY TO TRAVEL!!! His very first day in the USA wasn't until October 1978 to perform with the Police at CBGB's! The Roxanne 7" single was a Flop! Sting was Poor!!! This guy Roy Smith said he met Sting in 1977 and gave him the songs. So Roy I have a question??? Who was the Police's guitarist at the time when you met Sting? Henri Padovani never performed Roxanne cause he wasn't in the band or never even heard about it until Stewart told him about it once it started hitting the radio waves.
And lets just say if Sting did travel to the USA in 1977.....1. Sting has no money and 2. You think Sting's wife at that time Frances Tomelty would let Sting travel there to do nothing when they have a baby together......I DONT THINK SO! Don't worry sting...everything will be fine!!
Wasn't message in a Bottle written on a back of a bus sting was traveling in??
