Sting, who is performing a new version of "Sister Moon" on Herbie Hancock's new CD "Possibilities", had the following to say: "Herbie Hancock has been an iconic figure in my personal pantheon for many, many years. Long before I was fortunate enough to work with him I had followed his startling trajectory from his work with Miles Davis, the Headhunters and up to the present day. While the core of his work has always been jazz, his openness to new ideas, technological as well as musical, has bestowed on him an ageless and natural 'hipness' that sits well with his playful genius. A deeply spiritual and delightful human being, Herbie rocks!"
Herbie Hancock's highly anticipated duets album, "Possibilities," is being co-released by Starbucks Hear Music, Hancock Music and Vector Recordings on August 30 in the U.S. and Canada. The new version of "Sister Moon" features some interesting syncopated rhythms - interspersed piano, bass, and acoustic guitar vamp on the melody that Sting sings the first two words on the original recording. The end of the chorus is stretched ("I'd go out of my miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind...............out of my mind, but for you") before snapping back into the slick, choppy groove of the main verse.
Really great stuff. The original evokes a solitary stroll in a lonely, isolated area, this new take evokes a solitary stroll through some happening nightlife. A different kind of craziness :)
I'm all for reinterprations, but in my mind they only work when they suit the lyrics. The Cornelius Mix of "Moon Over Bourbon Street" was interesting, but didn't fit the tone of the words Sting was singing at all. Hancock's take on "Sister Moon" is an elegant and respectful interpretation of the song.
