Sun Jul 03 2005 | STING DEMANDS KNIGHTHOOD FOR URE

imageContact Music reports that Sting has slammed the British honours system for rewarding SIR Bob Geldof while overlooking his Live Aid co-founder and organiser Midge Ure. Ex-Ultravox star Ure co-wrote the 1984 charity single Do they know it's Christmas time? and co-organised both Live Aid and Live 8. But while Geldof received an honourary knighthood in 1986, Ure was given the lesser rank of Officer Of The Order Of The British Empire (OBE) just last month.

Source: Contact Music Sting says, "I think it's great that Midge has just been given an OBE but he's never got as much recognition as Bob. It's not fair. Should he get a knighthood like Bob? Yes, he should. The thing with Midge is that he doesn't mind Bob getting more fuss."
Of his award, Ure says, "I was surprised. I think it's wonderful. I've been so embroiled with Live 8 that it's been quite hard to take in."

However, things did get worse: Bob Geldof infuriated fellow Live Aid founder Midge Ure at the Live 8 gig by performing without him. The Irish organiser of the charity show had promised to sing his classic hit I don't like Mondays with Ure, but instead performed to the crowd without informing the former Ultravox star, according to British newspaper The People.

An onlooker says of yesterday's tensions, "Midge stormed around, calling Bob every name under the sun. The air was blue. Bob had promised that this time he'd be up on stage with him. "But he neglected to tell Midge when that would be and strolled on without him. Midge was in the VIP hospitality area when he heard Bob. No one knows if Bob did it deliberately or just forgot."
