Sting’s “Back To Bass” tour in early 2012 will provide a platform for Amnesty International to raise awareness on the organisation’s campaign against oil pollution and human rights abuse in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

For more than two decades, Sting has been a proud supporter of Amnesty International and their work to promote human rights worldwide. This longstanding relationship continues today, as Amnesty volunteers will organise information booths, highlighting their Niger Delta campaign, at each venue along his 2012 “Back to Bass” tour.

The tour, which received very positive reviews across North America last year, extends throughout Europe, the UK and South Africa beginning February 5, 2012 with a sold-out concert at The Sage Gateshead in Newcastle, then Manchester, Glasgow and finally London.

Sting’s support for Amnesty International began in 1981, when he performed at “The Secret Policemen’s Other Ball” benefit concert...

Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan, Honouring 50 Years of Amnesty International [Box set]

Two iconic forces that have impacted the past half century - Amnesty International and Bob Dylan – are being saluted by 80 musicians in Chimes of Freedom.
To honour 50 years of Amnesty International, Chimes of Freedom is released, a 4CD that features a stellar and diverse group of artists across the generational and musical spectrum. The performers, including many of Amnesty International's longtime supporters, range in age from Miley Cyrus, 19, to folk music legend Pete Seeger, who, at 92, records Dylan's poignant "Forever Young", with a children's chorus.
The diversity of the musicians and musical genres -- from rock, rap, hip-hop to pop, folk, country, jazz and blues -- attests to Amnesty's depth of support in the music community, the universal appeal of the core message of human rights, and the breadth of Dylan's impact on culture. Almost every track on the album is being released for sale for the first time -- except for the title song, Dylan's original...

STING AND HIS NEWCASTLE PAINTING

A painting commissioned by Wallsend-born pop star Sting is going back on show in the north east this weekend.
The 12ft-by-8ft painting of the Tyne, with the 60-year-old’s native North Tyneside visible in the distance, is back at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle from Saturday until May.
The painting, titled Northern City Renaissance, by Stephen Hannock, depicts the river as it is today, with the Sage Gateshead and Gateshead Millennium Bridge visible.
Partially hidden under layers of paint are images and text relating to Tyneside’s mining heritage, including a photo of Sting.
Gallery curator Julie Milne said: “Sting greatly appreciates and collects Stephen Hannock’s work and commissioned this piece to celebrate his home town.
“We are delighted to be able to show it to the public once again.”

STING AND TRUDIE AT LAUNCH BAG ISSUE

Sting and Trudie attended the launch of "the Bag Issue" at the House of St Barnabas in London. Trudie Styler has been patron of the Mukti charity for 10 years. Mukti has been working with the orphanage Karm Marg to provide us with The Bag Issue. The Karm Marg orphanage was set up in 1997 to give disadvantaged kids in India shelter, care, medical support and education, plus the skills and knowledge to create an income and build them a better future – hence The Bag Issue bags. The bags are 100 per cent recycled and made from elephant dung. The children at Karm Marg have created their own label for the bags: 'Jugaad', which means "something made from nothing". Jugaad gives the children a chance to be creative, learn new skills and pick up ideas about business.
The bags are manufactured at the homes of workers in the local village, women who live on subsistence smallholdings and rely on this employment.
Available from December 19 for £2.99 plus postage...

Sting has been named as patron of a £1.5m project by The Sage Gateshead to create a training base for young people. The scheme aims to transform the arches behind the venue into a purpose-built centre for disadvantaged and vulnerable young people. The project is currently based in temporary buildings and demand means the space is being outgrown. Wallsend-born Sting said it was an important project. He said: "Having grown up on Tyneside, I'm pleased to support this appeal for The Arches project and The Sage Gateshead's ongoing commitment to creating opportunities for today's young musicians and music lovers in the North East."

The Black Eyed Peas charity concert that attracted tens of thousands of giddy fans to Central Park and Sting's 25th anniversary and 60th birthday concert at the Beacon Theatre raised more than $7 million for the poverty-fighting Robin Hood Foundation, the organization announced Monday.
With an audience of 60,000, the Black Eyed Peas' Friday night show was the largest charity concert ever held on the Great Lawn, Robin Hood officials said. The concert was rescheduled months after a storm forced it to be called it off the first time.
The funds came from VIP tickets to the otherwise-free Central Park concert, along with donations made via texts from the Great Lawn. Robin Hood also raised money through ticket sales from the Saturday night show for Sting, which featured Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, Rufus Wainwright and Billy Joel, among others.
The money will go toward food pantries, homeless shelters, health clinics and job training for...

Sting is backing an anti-smoking campaign launched by regional public health organisation Fresh, which campaigns for a "smoke free North East". The "Every Breath" campaign has been created to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and encourage people to quit. Regional TV and radio activity includes a voiceover of a young boy reading the lyrics to the song. The campaign was created by Robson Brown. Sting said: "Many people across the UK are affected by lung damage and other smoking related illnesses, particularly in the North East where I grew up. I'm pleased to support a programme which works towards giving people the motivation and support they need to quit."
The "Every Breath" campaign will be aimed at smokers who are aged between 25 and 50 years especially in the socio-economic group C2D households (over half of the North East's smokers are in this group). It will clearly demonstrate that COPD is a progressive disease in which the...

Country star Vince Gill and rock star Sting teamed up at the Hammerstein Ballroom last night to help CMT Crossroads celebrate its 10th anniversary in a big way. It was the first New York taping in five years for the cable country video network’s program, which teams country artists with those of other genres in illustrating the far-reaching roots of country music–and usually tapes in Nashville. The show airs November 25th. Following songs were performed:
Liza jane
Fields of gold
Whenever you come around
If I ever lose my faith in you
These days
Shape of my heart
Don't let our love start slipping away
Let it be me (Everly Brothers)
Every breath you take

SOUL CAGES - THE MUSICAL

The title might not be the official one, but comes close to the content of the new musical which is in the making with the words of Sting and Brian Yorkey. They are working on a musical which we reported on last year, entitled "The Last Ship", featuring music and lyrics by Sting and a book by Mr. Yorkey, who is directing. The story is set in the 1980s in Newcastle. The lead character, Gideon, is described as a man in his 30s: "Charismatic, charming, cynical, worldly-wise; quick to buy a round or throw a fist, slow to open his heart. Grew up around the shipyards of Newcastle, got out as soon as he could, coming home to come to terms with his family, his history, and his future." This is very similar to The Soul Cages concept album from 1991, still considered to be one of Sting's best albums ever.
Other principal characters include Gideon’s brother, Michael, who is a priest ("A man of the cloth, but dig just a little deeper and you’ll find a true Geordie...

Sting cancelled a concert he was due to give in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana on Monday, blaming violations of the human rights of striking oil workers in the ex-Soviet state. Sting said in a statement published on his website that he cancelled the concert, part of his Symphonicity world tour, after campaign group Amnesty International told him of repressions against oil and gas workers.
"Hunger strikes, imprisoned workers and tens of thousands on strike represents a virtual picket line which I have no intention of crossing," Sting was quoted as saying in the statement late Sunday. However, Sting has been criticised for giving a concert in Tashkent in 2009 organised by the daughter of Uzbek President Islam Karimov, criticised for human rights abuses.

At the same time however, Sting was present at a private event with Chris Botti in Batumi, Georgia...

On Wednesday 25 May 2011, at 22:30 GMT on BBC Four: "Herb Alpert, Tijuana Brass and Other Delights"
This is the story of deals on the beach, accidental pop stars, friendship, comebacks, multimillion dollar deals and new discoveries - the story of musician, producer, record industry mogul and artist, Herb Alpert. Herb is probably best known as the trumpet player who created the Tijuana Brass and sold America, and the world, the sound of Mexico. Or the crooner that made the ladies swoon when he sang This Guy's in Love With You. From his first job working with soul legend Sam Cooke to creating A&M records, Alpert's life reads like a wonderful story of dreams come true.
This profile follows him and platforms his music and artwork as he exhibits his sculptures for Hollywood's art elite.
Contributors include Lou Adler, Quincy Jones, Richard Carpenter, Sting, Jam & Lewis and Stephen Fry.
