Fri Apr 26 2013 | Laila Biali to perform with Jo Lawry

CDs at eBay USA | eBay UK | eBay DE

Friday, May 10, 24, 31: Laila Biali
Doors at 6:30pm / Shows at 7:30pm

Award-winning Canadian Jazz pianist, vocalist and songwriter Laila Biali, who has toured with Suzanne Vega, Chris Botti and Paula Cole, recorded with and supported Sting (see Sting’s DVD release, "A Winter’s Night: Live from Durham Cathedral"), and played all over the world at Tokyo's Cotton Club, Peru's El Festival Internacional de Lima, and Carnegie Hall in New York City, will be taking over SubCulture for a residency in May! Each performance features leading musicians from the New York scene including saxophonist John Ellis, vocalist Jo Lawry and violinist Zach Brock. Laila Biali's arrangements of jazz standards, contemporary pop songs, and original pieces will be given unique, contrasting treatments within the context of each hand-picked ensemble. These shows will be the NYC debut of REQUESTOMATIC, where concertgoers can email requestomatic@lailabiali.com, request a song from her existing repertoire, or challenge her to arrange a song of their choosing. Two songs each show will be chosen and debuted. www.lailabiali.com Tix: $15-18

Sting had this to say about Laila Biali: "It is the ultimate task given to the musician, whether as singer or instrumentalist, to create a unique signature or fingerprint that is instantly recognisable as their own. What is surprising and delightful in Laila Biali is that both as vocalist and pianist she accomplishes this with equal aplomb. She is an exciting and unique talent, and I admire her greatly."

Thu Apr 25 2013 | Get Up! Stand Up! Highlights From The Human Rights Concerts 1986 - 1998 - CD/DVD release

The Police CDs at eBay USA | eBay UK | eBay DE

Eagle Rock Entertainment will be releasing a compilation CD and DVD release of Get Up! Stand Up! Highlights From The Human Rights Concerts 1986 - 1998. This compilation features The Police performing Message In A Bottle and Every Breath You Take at Giants Stadium on June 15, 1986 and will be released worldwide by Warner Bros on June 4.
Get Up! Stand Up! presents highlights from The Human Rights Concerts the series of benefit concerts staged between 1986 and 1998 to raise awareness and funds for the Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights organisation Amnesty International. The first set of performances come from A Conspiracy Of Hope, Amnesty's 25th anniversary US concert tour in 1986. This was followed by Human Rights Now!, the historic 5-continent 20-concert world tour undertaken in 1988. The series continued with stand-alone concerts An Embrace Of Hope in Chile in 1990 and The Struggle Continues in Paris in 1998. The list of musicians who contributed their services is extraordinary and includes some of the world's foremost artists - drawn from several nations and representing a wide range of musical styles. The primary factor uniting them was their desire to donate their time and talents to place a spotlight on Amnesty s vital work campaigning for people whose human rights are abused. Building on the achievements of Amnesty s legendary Secret Policeman s Ball benefit shows, albums and movies - these concerts brought awareness of the cause to an ever-wider public. This new release is designed to continue that mission and raise further funds for Amnesty s crucial work.

Sting CDs at eBay USA | eBay UK | eBay DE

The musical called "The Last Ship", based on Sting's own history and his album Soul Cages, will now also feature a live band for every performance. While the casting has been called for a two days audition session in New York on April 1st and 2nd, the group of musicians has already been formed and will consist of:
- David Paich (keyboards)
- Steve Porcaro (keyboards)
- Steve Lukather (guitars)
- Nathan East (bass)
- Simon Phillips (drums)

Sting described them as "the best band he has performed with so far. Toto would be jealous!"

The Last Ship tells of a group of shipyard workers whose yard is to close and who are reluctant to transfer their skills to service the offshore industry.

... and it is 1st of April. :-)

On January 30, Sting performed a moving rendition of “Fields of Gold” in Los Angeles at the memorial service for A&M Records’ beloved Gil Friesen. Gil worked with Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss to make A&M Records an independent power house in the 1970s and 80s, launching The Police, Sting, as well as Carole King, Cat Stevens, Billy Preston, the Carpenters, and my favorite A&M Single of all time, “Do You Know What I Mean” by Lee Michaels. A&M star Bryan Adams sang “Heaven,” Suzanne Vega performed a song she wrote for Gil, Herb Alpert and Lani Hall did a duet on “I’ll Remember You.” Other guests included Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers of The Police, Sting’s manager and Gil’s friend Kathy Schenker, manager Derek Power, artist Ed Ruscha, Tom Freston, Peter Morton, and Jann Wenner…Speakers included Friesen’s two sons, aged 7 and 57.
