The Police guitarist Andy Summers isn’t closing the door on another reunion tour for the band. While he said that he always thinks the band has “unfinished business,” he certainly is not sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring, hoping, wishing, praying or expecting Sting to be on the other end of the call.

During a recent chat with Guitar International, Summers said, “I always think it’s unfinished business. Why does it have to end? People always want to hear the band and want to hear those songs. We haven’t killed each other. We made it through the tour. It was the third biggest tour of all time, only because we decided not to go on forever, otherwise it would have been the biggest. It was just a phenomenal success on all levels.”

Right, it was a major success, so exactly why did it have to end?

That’s a question only Summers, Sting and drummer Stewart Copeland can answer, if they are able to let bygones be bygones. Regardless, Summers left the door of a reunion wide open, as opposed to simply cracked.

He said, “To me, I don’t think it’s wishful thinking…it is just too powerful to think it’s over. I don’t know. I’m not sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. Just getting on with the next project – so to speak.”

Summers certainly doesn’t romanticize the interpersonal relationships in The Police, saying that the mega successful reunion tour of 2007 and 2008 did not heal old wounds nor did it repair any of the damage that was inflicted years ago. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Summers said, “It was difficult. At the beginning, after the first fight, I thought, ‘We aren’t going to make it, it ain’t going to work, it’s not going to happen.’ But, the minute we started playing in front of those gigantic audiences, it was so ridiculously strong. It was hard to moan and feel bad about it when you’ve got that kind of success enveloping you.”

Success does not mean all wine and roses when it comes to The Police. The way Summers put it, the idea of going on tour with his former bandmates again makes him think, “Why not go back in the ring with Mike Tyson?” Yeah, that’s a harsh way of looking at it, but things are that tough between the former members of The Police. It’s all sucker punches and haymakers, it seems.

Summers finished, “You’d think by now it would be, ‘We’re all grown up now, no problem.’ But it’s still difficult. Because when you do this kind of thing, in this field, you’ve got to be vulnerable. That’s the way it is. You have to wear your emotions on your sleeve to be able to do it really well, so that all the magic can happen. It’s a bit like trying to defuse a bomb.”

So tell Sting and Copeland to thrown on their hazmat suits and embark on another tour!

Sting in your old age as performer why not go out with a BANG with one more Police album and tour. You are brillant as a solo artist but solo you lack the magic of that trinity of the Police. that made you what you are. Just accept it. Take the pain which you are the king of and go back in the ring one more time. Andy says he isnt waiting by the phone but I bet he is... Who wouldnt be. I keep coming back to this site in search of the Police dream myself but always find myself having to settle for the next mediocre Sting rehash. Happy New year. I know Sting will do what Sting wants to do. Sting have a look at your royalties which ones are bigger the ones from The Dream of the Blue Turtles or the ones from Syncronicity. We all know the answer. Follow the money Sting follow it!!

No I dont think Sting cares what I have to say at all. What I had to say was on my mind and I just wanted to put it out there. Also dont you think some nights when Sting is bored and online he doesnt come by here and read the posts. I know i would and his ego is to big for him not to. After all Sting used to write angry letters to his critics. He may never admit to coming by here but I bet he does.

agreed Slumach. STing's ego is fat enough that he would come in here on bored lonely nights to find out what others say and think about his music and/or despite what some would think how could he not.

"delusional fans"? seriously?!?! LMAO!!!

That description could be applied to describe any & all registered user of this site? It's a Sting ( and I do mean "All Things Sting") fansite/forum for goodness sakes!

Spewing statements like that makes others here "look like golden rays of sunshine", comparativley speaking.

BTW... Andy's always going to claim it's "unfinished business" as far as I'm concerned.

I'd say The Police have a lot of unfinished business... they haven't even released a retrospective app with Stew's and Andy's best moments.

I have the feeling Sting won't be featured..

How burned would you feel if you were Andy or Stuart and being forced out of being able to play at some historic gig like Live Aid. Geldof even tried to ask Sting to get the Police back together for it. But he wouldnt. What a selfish act on Stings part. He couldnt put his ego away for that. That being said I loved his version of Message in a Bottle just him on the guitar. If I was Andy or Stuart I would feel great pain having been forced to miss that gig. OF course Andy will always think the Police have unfinished buisness. Sting derailed the train when it was going full steam ahead. Imagine what that felt like to Andy and Stuart when he first ripped the Police out from underneath them. THen doing it to Andy again after the reunion tour. The Police I am sure will always leave a pain in his heart.

i would think not. the definition of delusional is this: maintaining fixed false beliefs even when confronted with facts. i wouldn't ever claim this to be the mental state of every member of this website. and i am not sure why any one else would think that.

so looking at the facts, most of us are probably quite aware that Sting has followed his own eccentric muse for most of his career. another fact i learned is that Sting doesn't think too highly of fan forums. i know that sort of thing is tough to read for fans but here is what a few of us know:
a certain member of this forum who no longer partakes in the discussion once wrote some criticism regarding a certain drummer who was working with Sting at that time. the drummer was made aware of this and took the time to write and email in the kindest manner possible to the member who actually had the nerve to be criticizing him.
ironically, a few years later, the two actually came face to face in a NY nightclub the former member was performing at and he apologized for any rude remarks he made. he admitted it was nothing more than jealousy that he was working in Sting's band. but what is pertinent to our discussion is that what came out in their discussion is that when he was made aware that the drummer was perusing this message board, Sting simply told him it was a waste of his time to bother with any such fan sites.
so that is why i tend to view any members who write their words directly to Sting as delusional. i hope that cleared things up a bit.

Know your argument does not convince me at all that Sting does not come here and I am not saying this because I want him to. It just makes sense that he would. Stings star is falling. Do you no think that was major motivation for the last Police reunion. If his tour stop selling he would be scramble around and try and find out why. Being a man of Intelligence he would go where the fans are. After all the fans do matter to him its why he does not mind sitting for hours and signing autographs. Stuart used to say he was a FAME whore and that he loved it. I think he was missing his Police fame when he got them back together thinking maybe this time it would be diffirent.
