Strange choice.
Maybe it's the long setlists he's performing, but I was expecting the album to be much longer. Jun 11, 10 | 2:29 pm

I also thought there would be more tracks on the album - they have the arrangements anyway, why not put them on the album?
However, I think "We Work The Black Seam" is a nice surprise. And with this track list it's definitely not "another greatest hits album". Jun 11, 10 | 2:36 pm

i'm all for the quality over quantity aspect. with an interesting track list as that is, i won't pine for the absence of certain tracks. what may work okay in a live setting may not translate well to the recording. i sure wouldn't want to have Sting and DG galvanize the detractors by making this cd some lackluster "hits done orchestrally" package: Every Breath You Take, Fields Of Gold, Desert Rose, etc. this seems to have been created with care and class in accordance to how the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon normally presents any product.
i have the feeling that there will be some 'exclusive' content being offered either from iTunes or a seller like Barnes and Noble. it was already advertised that Why Should I Cry For You was recorded as part of this project, so be on the lookout, dutiful Sting fans. any extras will probably wind up on a Japanese edition. That's indeed true and I was thinking the same, but nonetheless, they could have put a few more out of the nearly 30 songs he's performing these days.
Let's see what eventually will see the light of day (iTunes, import editions, etc...) Jun 11, 10 | 5:00 pm

It's obviously not time constraints of the album but maybe the fact that more songs will mean a higher pricetag?
Interesting to see We Work the Black Seam and Burn for You but they aren't being done so far. Jun 11, 10 | 5:50 pm

Overall, I'm enthused by the chosen songs. There is a good cross section of hits and fan favorites that serve to represent the vast diversity that is indicative of Sting's career. I Burn For You and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic from his early years. Next To You and Roxanne from his first big breakthrough with The Police. One each, We Work The Black Seam and Englishman In New York, from his 80s solo albums. She's Too Good For Me and I Hung My Head from his excellent work in the 90s. The Brand New Day era is represented by the gem of a b-side End Of The Game and the much maligned Sacred Love era is surprisingly represented by his contribution to the Cold Mountain soundtrack. The notable omission is any track from Soul Cages and as others have pointed out, Why Should I Cry For You? may very well pop up in some form.
And I know there is no reason to be negative, yet I can't help but think that Sting missed an excellent opportunity to record his definitive version of All Would Envy, one song he composed but has never properly released. In my opinion, a solid version of that song would have even made a fine single to promote Symphonicities at some point this year. But, not to be.... Jun 11, 10 | 7:52 pm

Baht, there were some older men with their young wives noticeably uncomfortable during that song at Red Rocks. Great version during the concert. BTW, excellent choice of songs but Russians totally blew me away at Red Rocks and it should be included...

I'm glad it's Deutsche Gramaphone still at the helm. I like Sting working with them. It gives him a certain status, which means he'll be taken more seriously..
I've already posted at the news sectioion saying I wish it had been more tracks but perhaps if they're fully worked out tracks (6-8minutes) then I won't complain! As usual, I'll be looking out for the Japenese edition! Jun 12, 10 | 8:14 am

Trini, I am also surprised that Russians was not included as it seems tailor made for the tone of this project. Could it be remotely possible that some of the subject matter would have prevented its inclusion?
"There is no historical precedent To put the words in the mouth of the President" Sting and DG might want to also sell this latest product to conservatives with disposable income as well. So when he blatantly reiterates the fact that their most beloved ideological leader Reagan was no more than a tool of the power hungry and greedy men around him, well that might not go over so well now, as they've worked so very hard to have successfully twisted history and basically had their actor in office canonized. They really wanted John Wayne...but they had to settle for Ronald Reagan. :) Do you think that Sting and the label are scaling down the track list solely for the American market? I remember one of the reasons given in the past by Sting for the exclusion of songs is that he feels the normal attention span for the average listener is somewhere around 45-48 minutes. It is a well known common practice for labels to include extra tracks on the Japanese edition since they are forced to pay high costs for a disc. Jun 12, 10 | 12:44 pm

baht,
I suspect All Would Envy will show up in ITUNES or on the japanese version. Though I agree, it would be a great "new song" for a single. Most people haven't ever heard it. If I'm correct, the only known recorded studio version is Shawn Colvin's. Jun 12, 10 | 1:54 pm

Baht,
You gotta hear and see this version of Russians performed, 2nd to none. Bourbon Street was magnificent. I think you maybe right, I am pretty sure the Japanese version would have more tracks... Later Jun 12, 10 | 4:12 pm
