STing, once again proving my point what an ass he is

While Sting paid his dues as a young musician in the 1970s, first in Tyneside, performing around his job as a teacher, and then in London, where he formed the Police with drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers, his children have a point: Sting’s fortune was put at £180m by this year’s Sunday Times Rich List. His wealth, he says, comes primarily from touring. “We were very frugal. We never went for the giantism that most rock bands went in for.” (Again, he refuses to name names.) “We always brought money home.”

The Police reunion tour of 2007-2008 helped to boost his fortune to the tune of $28m, according to Forbes magazine. While financially a success, he describes the reunion as “a mistake psychologically”. He says: “It was much more difficult than I imagined. I was supposed to feel nostalgia – I didn’t. The audiences loved it – it was like mum and dad got back together again. But I don’t think I could do it again.”

Why would his so call manager let him say such childish stupid crap like this in the press?Damn , at least keep it at home behind locked doors. STing is such as ass#&*& for saying this. He just proves my point time and time again as to why he is so jealous of his "band", resorts to regergitating greatest hits with an orchestra, and his status as a solo artist has long since faded. As for nostalgia, what do you think you are doing now STing!!!!

Yeah, it was a mistake because everyone loved it and now he can't top that level of adoration as a solo artist...

What a lame thing to say. Truly. Even if it's true, does he really have to announce this to the press?

Fuck him if that's how he feels. And I don't care who I may piss off saying that. After all we contributed to his newest millions you'd think he could at least show a little graciousness about it.

Oh and can the symphonicity bs if he's so opposed to nostalgia.

Very sad. He must be a troubled individual indeed. Get a good counselor, Sting, and get with the program.

Oh well. My bank account appreciates the fact that there will never be another Police tour and will not be financially contributing to any of Sting's future endeavors including the Symphonishitty CD and upcoming tour

Petulant pansie!

Seriously? What a pompous geek.

Time to hang 'em up, malgordo.

Go play lawn bowling with the rest of the washed up stars.

Oh, and take that SymPHONYcity regurgitated crap with you.

If it was so painful, why the Reunion Tour lasted that long?

Good question since no one has been able to answer that question

I think what he is trying to say but misses for whatever reason is that the tour was more stressful than he ever expected it to be. Somewhat stressful because of the problems of the past coming back. Individuals know what buttons create certain responses and after awhile you get tire of that.

The mum and dad comment could be that he or anybody that is a child of a divorced parent hoping that one day their parents get back together. Everybody keeps saying that they should - and finally they do and you end up feeling sad about it in the end because its not what it once was.

If you were the one that originally posted this that would be one thing but it looks like it was lifted directly from Stewart Copeland's forum site... oh wait it was.... http://stewartcopeland.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11481

The reunion tour was fun - but I went to three shows early in the tour when the errors existed but the energy was there. For what I saw later on it looked like they were phoning the shows in sometimes... and thats expected on a long tour.

Reg, I never liked the idea of the reunion. I think it would have been best if it never happened. Probably would have been better for Sting's creativity as well. He made so much money out of it, that he is no longer trying to continue his solo songwriting career. In the end everyone - Police fans and Solo Sting fans are disappointed. And you're the best example. Never met a more disappointed poster on any Sting forum.

munch, i think the reunion didn't make much difference at all concerning Sting's creativity, except that it was yet another adventure he took on in order to avoid facing that writer's block has hit him hard. the first stall was going out on the Broken Music tour in 2005. then that was followed by recording Dowlands music on Labyrinth in 2006 and another Broken Music tour the same year. and also the promotional tour for Labyrinth. in 2007, we had the Police reunion and then there was the recording of Welcome To The Voice. in 2008 a second leg of the Police reunion was followed by rehearsal and a staged performance of Welcome To The Voice late in the year. last year Sting was mainly focused on the wonderfully eclectic Winter's Night project. and now the latest stall is this orchestral tour including his own songs. so the reunion was just a part of a pattern and in my opinion, was not quite to blame for the writer's block that set in a few years earlier. i don't believe Sting 'is no longer trying to continue'. i think he is just not satisfied with whatever musical ideas come to him.
but munch, i am not disappointed as this should have been expected. why would you feel so comfortable to claim that 'everyone' is disappointed?

I don't think it's only Police fans. I think a lot of people are disappointed. A lot of people became Sting fans because of his music, his songs. There are no more songs. He's doing now what he used to say he'd never do. Cashing in musically: Police reunion, Classical music tour of greatest hits, Tour of oldies.

Yes, the Winter album was good but those weren't his songs. Not new songs, at least (writing a melody for a poem and writing not very original lyrics to a Bach composition doesn't really count). And I know a lot of people didn't like Sacred Love. It wasn't up to his former standards. Perhaps it's just too much of a disappointement for me to accept that the artist I followed has dried out completely. :(

Seriously - this is the guy who gave us Blue Turtles, Nothing Like the Sun, Soul Cages, Ten Summoner's Tales and Mercury Falling? The guy standing and singing lift music of his own songs? Songs for the Vegas Lounge people? Honestly, it would have been better that he'd retired and done something like gardening than for us to live to see the day of such a fall.

oh boy, here we go. :) 'lift music', really? are you actually equating the performance from the other night in Morocco as lift music and songs for Vegas Lounge people? are you serious or are you solely basing your opinion on there being strings involved?
i'll admit that Sting's decision to not employ drummer Vinnie Colaiuta for this upcoming tour may not have been the best one since a drummer such as he might bring more punch to the proceedings and lend tasteful subtleties as well, but Sting simply didn't want that to cover the melodic orchestra.
what was fairly evident from the other night's performance is that this orchestral tour is not going to be an entirely laid back affair. i think most fans could agree with me that the performance contained as much or even more dynamics than what was featured on the Brand New Day tour. this prefabricated charge of 'lift music' that we've seen from a select few for the past few weeks now absolutely rings hollow in my opinion and that might be realized while actually watching and listening to what Sting is serving up for this tour.

I see that Fish is right. The only 'lift' around here is the lifting of others' words that Reggadabla seems to be doing when he started this thread. :)
Am I correct in the assertion that every single word in that post happens to have been lifted verbatim directly from that most pleasant of spots on the internet, stewartcopeland.net?
Why do that, reg? Why? We are well aware of the vitriol that flows over there. If you wish to spread vitriol, at the very least, make it your own. You do so well at that most other times.

The reality for most fans....

No new sting songs (whether performed by The Police or solo) = disappointment.

I am grateful that I have learned alot from Sting re: music (in all shapes and forms of music.) He has opened all of us to many different things.

Today, I too clamour for more new Sting original songs.

I don't think this is the end for him.

What I do not like is how he is now debasing Andy and Stewart and the entire Police reunion. Really uncalled for and frankly I do not want to hear it from him. Sting chose for 20+ years not to participate in a Police reunion of any sorts....Punchline: he should be happy he made $28 million + and put his career back into turbo charge mode.

Andy is so accomplished (I encourage you all to get all his solo work) and so is Stewart. These two men stand on their own and with Sting (as a threesome) tear the walls down compared to almost all if not all bands!

Of course Sting knows that all three are a pain to each other. That is why they broke up. What did he really expect? Stewart will call it his band until the day he dies. Sting needs to grow up re: The Police and lay off the cliche marketing.

"Everyone expects a surprise from me"

"I would have to be certified insane to go back with The Police"

Blah blah blah

There are only two major surprises left:

1. A new Police album

2. A new commercial Sting solo album

I will take either (and prefer if he goes solo...do it with the killer Broken Music band who really kicked it on some of the Police songs.)

Bottom line: Reg is right that Sting is acting out re: The Police. All I want to hear is that he has chosen not to reform them because it is no longer the right time and place in his career. And ...Sting delivers new original material in the style of his choice.

with all due respect, i would point out that sting made no mention of andy and stewart lacking skill. he said it a "psychologically" difficult reunion. this is not an insult regarding the other police members' musicianship, rather it is a critique on the band's chemistry, and as was rightly pointed out by iceman, the reason they broke up in the first place.

should he have brushed off the question he was asked by the journalist with a generic 'it was fun but it won't happen again' answer and not given a reason? some feel he should have. i, personally, didn't need sting saying it wasn't a pleasant tour. i saw them 3 times (towards the beginning, middle and end of the tour) and i can safely say that with each successive concert the mood on stage grew a bit colder. sting's voice was also suffering as the tour went on, no doubt due to the strain required to sing those songs. and to top it off, he was ill for a part of the tour.

yes, he should be grateful for the money he was paid, but let's be real, it's not as if he needed to get back together with the police for that tour in order to rake in the cash. he is fully capable of drawing crowds, even with an eclectic project such as the classical tour. for proof, i challenge anyone to check how many venues are sold out, or near sold out and how many dates are being added to accommodate the demand to hear sting's songs in what many here consider to be "boring" orchestral arrangements.

yeah keep dreaming and being in denial of what STing's actions have been
Since STing dropped the band for his own self altrustic reasons he has been one of the few leaders of a famous rock band who I have heard kick them down so hard you would think if he were able to build a rocket he would take all the STing fanatics his family his brainwashing dumbass posse and take them there far far away from Andy and Stewart. Finally WHEN his solo career is in the toilet he brings up the "im feeling nostalgic, woke up one morning and decided that I was pining for andy and stewart. Let' call them up. While on tour, lets stay away from them as much as possible. Let's use the Police name and conglomerate to my advantage. Then when the tour is finally done, tell the press how horrible it was to be in the "band" again, how depressing and psychologically damaging it was to be with andy and stewart again but let's tell them while I was on tour, it was sheer pain and torture. That is why I added two more legs to the tour cause it is such torture. Hell I can make another 100 million so why not. After the tour is done, then I can go back and talk smack about andy and stewart, the police cause I know that my entourage always leads me in the right direction and helps me make those great decisions. I am always up to new challenges like playing my songs once more with an orchestra that bascially sounds like caca." Maybe when I am hard up for money again, I will wake up one morning and say "what other challenge is left in my life that I have been avoiding for 25 years? a new police album? but first I need to call up andy and stewart and apologize to them for talking crap about the band once more for the 456787th time and of course never admitting to them that I was wrong and that I have an inflated ego the size of Montana.

Yeah it is pretty safe to say that STing has never said anything negative about the police, andy or stewart. It's all in the media's head for the past 30 years. Going back to my original point in the 2nd/3rd sentence, it is pretty " F" stupid of him to talk badly about a band that pretty much, let's face it ,made him who he is today. In all seriousness, it is extremely unprofessional. This is when I started losing respect for STing, a man who I really admired whole heartedly. Yes I like his music, his words, his composing, etc to those who think I hate it. However as I have said before, STing would be where he is today without meeting andy and stewart when he did. He can draw a crowd for concerts today ..sure. but not the caliber of a Police concert. He will never get that adoration ever again. The majority of his fans.. of course the exceptions are inhere cause it's hard to see past the trees.. is something new, whether it be a Police album or solo. Of course he KNOWs he will get more fame and fortune with a Police album than solo. Deep underneath the fat ego, he knows

You expect him to lie and say that working with Stewart and Andy was a pleasure? And anyone who didn't think the reunion was for making money was seriously naive. And yes, continuations were added to the tour because they realised they could make more money. And they did it because they wanted money and not because they liked each other. It's work. Lots of people work with people they can't stand - for money. Why does it make you so angry?

As for former band members dissing other band members: Paul McCartney and John Lennon (even wrote venomous songs to each to other. John also called Paul a maneuvering swine.), Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth, Glenn Frey and Don Henley, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross, Andy Taylor and Simon LeBon (They had a reunion and later went their separate ways) and many more that I can't think of right now.

Sting says it all himself right here! Nothing has changed. When has it ever been different folks. The perceived tension in the group is milked for all it is worth. It sells tickets, makes the media attention greater and fuels the fire here. That is by design I am certain after all these years. Nothing I have seen makes me believe anything is different than it has ever been. Only expect the unexpected. So what's next? What do you least expect is next? Go with that!

reg, as usual. It's you who is dreaming. Creating a revisionist history on events. Just because Sting said the Police affected him negative ways, doesn't mean his pointing at Andy and Stewart. He is talking about himself. All three have a love/hate relationship with each other. Just because he's not doing what you want him to do doesn't make him what you say he is.

This, along with my response is pointless. I don't even know why I'm posting it amongst mostly delusion.

Dumb question... how can Stings comment be as what it has been viewed as and yet Stewart says the following?

He reveals “the soup of utter misery” that was the band’s hugely lucrative reunion tour in 2007 and 2008, when Sting, Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers – “three millionaires on a bus” – tortured one another for months on end.

Remember...Hell is full of music critics...

Truth hits in the first review with this segment...

"Some much-needed levity arrived during the encore, when Sting pulled out two lively, swinging numbers in "Desert Rose" (his last major hit single, which is already a decade old) and "She's Too Good for Me."

Hard to believe it's been that long... will this be considered Sting's "Lost Decade"? (I doubt it.)

plus I enjoyed this one too...

"He even broke out a few a cappella lines from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" in response to a shouted request from some bozo earlier in the show."

The other reviewer probably wanted to go see this show in actuality! Good for him that he got to go!

people who have a biased view of sting would be extremely hard pressed to enjoy anything he does. the first reviewer, ross raihala, clearly falls into this camp. nothing is good enough - not like the "old days" of the police. everything now is silly or stale or adult contemporary or cheesy, etc. it doesn't seem like mr. raihala enjoyed ANY sting solo songs except desert rose and she's too good for me. a fan favorite, fragile, which as been the main closer of sting concerts for almost 2 decades was labeled a "snoozer". it seems this guy was only there because it was his job to review the concert, not because he wanted to see/hear the show. these circumstances cannot allow for an open mind. as you rightly point out, trini, it's amazing those two reviews were of the same show.

mr. raihala attempts to provide evidence that his tastes are a good gauge of what makes quality music by listing the attendance figures for this symphonicity show and the police reunion show which happned at the same place years ago. this is faulty logic on a number of levels. first of all, the police reunion tour was a once in a lifetime event. i don't believe it will not happen again. it is beyond obvious that such a concert would draw bigger crowds. second - and i have argued this before - the number of people seeing a show is by no means a good indicator of how good the show is. miley cyrus packs people in by the thousands. enough said. the same is true of movies and books as well.

i listened to a very good quality boot of the hollywood bowl show and i was mostly delighted with what i heard. yes, it is old material once again, and for those who desperately want to hear new sting compositions it might be yet another frustrating detour. but i find the re-arrangements to be thoughtful, engaging, and some of them pretty daring. i am extremely happy to have tickets to see this show.

Reg, is there anything or anyone that doesn't make you angry? Every time you disagree with someone - either here or something that's in the press - you react as if they sullied the image of Christ. Anyway, Dom doesn't leech off Sting. He works for him. It's understandable that he's happy to get his lucrative job back. You'd feel the same way. As for branching out - maybe not a bad idea but still, why are you so angry? You know, not everyone in the world has to be a Police/Sting fan. Some of my best friends hate those songs.

Not mad at all Munch; got past that a long time ago; tired of dealing with the "people" in here and their stupid comments as well as defending my opinions which always went against theirs. I'm still a STing fan. I just lost a lot gusto on a lot of STing "bullet points". One of course is his career choices since he dumped Miles have not been the best. He still keeps that idiot semi decent guitarist Dom who REALLY does leech off STing cause that appears to be his only bread and butter. That Las Vegas article really was another frosting on the big overflowing cake for me. He needs to finally latch onto someone else and stop whining. When and if the Police do reunite, he will be at it again sucking his thumb and crying like a school girl again. As far as disagreeing with someone, it has always been the other way around but like I said I'm tired of arguing that point. My point now is that the Symphonicity thing is ok ( yes I did see it in two cities through a friend that works with a big corporation). I won't say what I really think cause it will just bring out the whiners again ( and the ones who would be the clients to open ground on the new mental health clinic). It is just time for STing to do something on his own or with the Police.

You're probably referring to a project of his very own new compositions in a pop style when you mention new musicians or producers, but in all realistic terms Sting has already been working with many new musicians and producers for the past few years. Edin Karamazov was a new musician and co-producer for Songs From The Labyrinth. Then Sting worked with producer Robert Sadin and a bevy of new musicians for If On A Winter's Night. Dom Miller was only on a handful of the many tracks on that album - Dean Parks and Sting handled guitar parts. And now Rob Mathes is producer on Symphonicities, where even more new musicians are being introduced to us. And Miller plays on less than half of the tracks, as Sting and Mathes contributed some guitar. So Sting does seem to be working with new musicians and producers, and it's always interesting to hear how some musicians can add their own personality to Sting's work.
